WHS Essay Prize 2021 – *Winner Announcement*

We are pleased to announce the winner of the WHS Leah Leneman Essay Prize for 2021 is Dr Lucie Duggan who is currently engaged in postdoctoral research in the Department for the Study of Culture at the University of Southern Denmark. The judges praised Lucie’s essay “The Chief Preservers of Ballad-Poetry”: Revisiting the Ballad Traditions of Scottish Women (18th century):

This essay was a pleasure to read and nicely argued. It made fascinating reading and has a clear line of argument. It is well-written and covers much material of interest and makes good use made of both primary and secondary material. It felt a little less sharply focused towards the end, but, nonetheless, was very strong essay. A really enjoyable read.

We would like to thank all the applicants for providing an interesting range of essays for the judges to consider.

We would like to congratulate Lucie for her interesting and thought-provoking work, and hope to see her essay published in due course.
