Last month Dr t s Beall and all the team at Protests & Suffragettes launched a crowdfunder to help them ‘highlight the gallus women behind Scotland’s radical history’ and create engaging resources for young people across Scotland:
Their aim is to educate people across Scotland, and especially young people, about Scotland’s suffragettes and radical women activists. They want to create Scottish Suffragettes playing cards – a deck of cards celebrating the amazing diversity of Scotland’s women activists, past and present. They also plan to work with schools and youth groups across Scotland to distribute Protests & Suffragettes cards, zines and activity packs – all for free!
Protests & Suffragettes succeeded in raising the initial £5,000 required to receive matched funding from Creative Scotland within 24hours!
They have now extended the crowdfunder to to widen their activities further. They’re ‘going BIG now as we Celebrate Scotland’s Suffragettes!‘ They plan to print more Scottish Suffragettes playing cards, Rent Strikers & Suffragettes zines, and distribute more Educational Activity Packs to schools and youth groups across Scotland.
They are also keen to pursue research on the connections and networks between Suffrage movement in Scotland and the US and Europe.
Protests & Suffragettes are an artist-led, voluntary team (2013-present) of creative activists and local historians based in Scotland. The project is led by socially-engaged artist Dr t s Beall – who has been working in Govan/Glasgow and with these histories for over a decade.
We were delighted to know the team were aware of our own resource ‘The Women’s Suffrage Movement in Scotland 1867-1928: A Learning Resource‘ and have plans to make use of it:
Also I can’t help but share Protests and Suffragettes wonderful image of one of Agnes Dollan, rent striker, suffragette, and founder member of the Women’s Peace Crusade. I’m so glad Protests & Suffragettes are uncovering more about her life. This quote is brilliant:
